Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 October 2026
The short version
- There is no account. We never ask for your name or email in the app.
- Your notes live on your device and in your own iCloud. We can’t see them there.
- When you create a summary, flashcards or a quiz, the text of that note is sent to our AI provider to make it.
- No ads, no tracking, and we never sell your data.
Who we are
OctoBuddy AI (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is made by Elena Meneghini, an independent developer. If you have any question about your privacy, write to studywithocto@gmail.com.
What stays on your device
Your notes, recordings, summaries, flashcards, quizzes, streaks and settings are saved on your device. If iCloud is turned on, Apple also keeps a copy in your private iCloud so it syncs between your iPhone, iPad and Mac. That copy belongs to your Apple account, and we have no access to it.
When you record a lecture, the audio is turned into text on your device. The recording itself is never uploaded to us.
What leaves your device, and why
Your note text, to generate study material
When you ask for a summary, flashcards or a quiz, the text of that note (or the key ideas taken from it) is sent to OpenAI, our AI provider, through AIProxy, a service that keeps our access keys safe. It is used only to create your study material and send it back to the app. OpenAI does not use this data to train its models, and may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse before deleting it.
An anonymous device identifier, to keep the service fair
To limit how much AI each device can use, and to stop abuse, AIProxy receives an anonymous identifier for your device and your IP address. These are not linked to your name or to any account.
Your purchases, to unlock Pro
Payments are handled by Apple. We never see your card details. To know whether you have Pro, the app uses RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous app user ID and your purchase history.
Reminders
Study reminders are scheduled on your device. They are not sent from a server.
What we don’t do
- We don’t show ads.
- We don’t track you across other apps or websites.
- We don’t sell or share your data with data brokers.
- We don’t currently use any analytics. If we add privacy-friendly, anonymous analytics in the future, we’ll update this page first.
The website and our email list
If you sign up for launch news on octobuddyapp.com, your email address is stored by MailerLite, our email service, and used only to send you news about OctoBuddy AI. Every email has an unsubscribe link. If you write to us for support, we keep that conversation in our email inbox so we can help you.
How long we keep data
Your notes and study material stay on your device and in your iCloud until you delete them. Data sent to generate study material is kept by our AI provider for up to 30 days. Purchase records are kept by RevenueCat and Apple as long as needed to manage your subscription.
Your choices and rights
You can delete any note in the app. Deleting the app removes the data on that device. To remove the iCloud copy, go to Settings, then your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage. Depending on where you live (for example in the European Union), you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Write to studywithocto@gmail.com and we’ll help.
Children
OctoBuddy AI is made for high school and university students. It is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. For important changes, we’ll also tell you in the app.
